VITREO-RETINAL UNIT

What does vitreoretinal mean?

Various vitreoretinal surgical and laser approaches can restore, preserve and enhance vision for many eye conditions such as certain types of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic vitreous hemorrhage, macular hole, a detached retina, epiretinal membrane and CMV retinitis.

What is vitreoretinal disease?

A large variety of conditions can affect the vitreous and retina that lie on the back part of the eye that is not readily visible, such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments or tears, macular holes, retinopathy of prematurity, retinoblastoma, uveitis, eye cancer, flashes and floaters and retinitis pigmentosa.

The team in this service treats conditions at the back of the eye which require surgical intervention.

Vitreoretinal surgery refers to any operation to treat eye problems involving the retina, macula, and vitreous fluid. These include retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and complications related to diabetic retinopathy.

We also run a vitreo-retinal emergency (VRE) clinic at Dr. Rajan Eyecare Hospital & Institute Lasik laser Center, which your GP or another referring clinician can send you to if they think that your condition requires more urgent treatment.
